Clinical evaluation and user experience of Vitrolife Labware dishes

Five dishes specifically developed and toxicity tested for IVF were evaluated by two clinics regarding clinical performance. The results at both clinics show that Vitrolife Labware are safe and support treatment success when used for clinical IVF. In addition, twenty clinics gave the dishes a higher score of usability than their traditional dishes showing that the new dish design is at least as user friendly as other dish types commonly used for IVF.

Comparison of cover oils - OVOIL gives both more good and top quality embryos

In a study by Sifer et el, microdroplet embryo cultures covered with OVOIL from Vitrolife gave a significantly increased mean number of good and top quality embryos at day 3, compared to other commercial available oils. This difference may be explained by the origin of raw materials and the difference in quality tests performed by each company.

Embryo culture in G-Series results in significantly higher cell numbers and implantation rates compared to culture in HTF

A study by Kleijkers show that besides cell numbers and implantations rates, gene expression and certain pathways in preimplantation embryos are also affected by culture medium.

EmbryoGlue improves pregnancy and implantation rates. Results from a meta-analysis on almost 10,000 embryo transfers

A meta-analysis of Japanese studies, including almost 10,000 cycles shows that EmbryoGlue improves implantation resulting in increased pregnancy rates confirming findings from the Cochrane reports.

G-Series culture media improve blastocyst development

Data from two studies presented at Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Clinical Embryologist show that good quality embryo rate and blastocyst development can be improved when using G-Series culture media (G-IVF, G-1 and G-2) from Vitrolife compared to a HTF-based non-hyaluronan containing media.

G-Series culture media shown to increase blastocyst development compared to control

In a study by Matsuoka et al, embryo culture was done either Vitrolife’s G-Series™ culture media or a mix of sequential culture media (control). The results show that good-quality blastocyst development was more frequent after culture in G-Series media containing hyaluronan.

G-TL supports blastocyst development in large volume

In a study presented at the ACE meeting in the UK, Shaw and co-workers compared single step time-lapse medium (Vitrolife, G-TL) with sequential series media (Sage, Quinn’s advantage) in large volume culture as well as micro drop culture. They found significantly higher day 5 blastocyst development rate in the G-TL group in both large and small volume culture.

New formulations of slowfreezing solutions for cleavage stage embryos result in outcomes similar to after vitrification

A study by Fang et al, found that FreezeKit Cleave and ThawKit Cleave significantly improved survival rates, clinical pregnancy rates and implantation rates. In fact, a survival rate of above 90% using the new formulations of solutions is very similar to that obtained after vitrification.

Optimised clinical outcomes with blastocyst culture and cryopreservation using Vitrolife G-Series culture media

A study by Zhu et al demonstrate that extended culture before cryopreservation allows for selection of viable embryos with a high chance of implantation after warming. The high blastocyst formation rate (73.8%) using Vitrolife culture media, together with an efficient cryopreservation program resulting in survival rates of >96% should eliminate any earlier concerns about blastocyst culture and cryopreservation.

Rapid-i is an effective system for human embryo vitrification at both the blastocyst and cleavage stage

In this study, Desai et al, conclude that “Rapid-i offers an excellent alternative to existing open vitrification devices for both day 3 embryos and for blastocysts” at the same time as it prevents direct contacts between embryos and liquid nitrogen.

STAR trial: VeriSeq™ PGS

The STAR trial: A randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing pregnancy rates following VeriSeq™ PGS versus standard morphology for elective single embryo transfer (eSET)

Sperm preparation with SpermGrad show positive effect on average telomere length, sperm motility and DNA fragmentation

Yang Q, et al, found significant correlations between sperm telomere length and the quality of early embryonic development. Density gradient centrifugation using SpermGrad (Vitrolife) enrich for sperm with high mobility and low DNA fragmentation and is the preferred technique for selection of sperm with longer telomeres.

SpermFreeze Solution™ studies show equal performance compared to egg yolk containing medium

A study by Tekcan M, et al, shows that SpermFreeze Solution™ without egg yolk performs just as well as a yolk containing medium and is free from undefined substances.

A randomized controlled study comparing pain experience between a newly designed needle with a thin tip and a standard needle for oocyte aspiration

To prove the benefits of the unique design of Sense, a prospective, randomised, multicenter study was carried out 1 . Oocyte retrieval using Sense resulted in significantly less vaginal bleeding compared to a conventional needle and a significantly reduced overall pain experience – 19% lower compared to a conventional needle. Most importantly, there were no differences in the number of oocytes with intact zona pellucida after aspiration, regardless of needle size. 1. Wikland M et al. Hum Reprod. 2010;25 (Suppl. 1), O-226

The effect of needle diameter on pain during oocyte retrieval

A randomized controlled trial, with the objective study pain in women undergoing oocyte retrieval with a reduced needle (20/17 gauge) compared to a standard needle (16¹, conclude that the use of a thinner needle results in significantly and clinically relevant lower pain scores during oocyte retrieval, and patients in the reduced needle group requested significantly less analgesia during oocyte retrieval than patients in the standard needle group. Pain scores remained significantly lower up until 2 days after the procedure. 1. Buisman E et al. 2020 In press https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33077240

Clinical evaluation and user experiences with Vitrolife Labware dishes

The specially designed square dishes were clinically evaluated in two ways; for embryo development and clinical pregnancy and for usability and user friendliness. The results show that Vitrolife Labware dishes are safe and support treatment success when used for clinical IVF. In addition the dishes scored higher on usability compared to other dishes commonly used for IVF.

Vitrolife MEA can detect sub-optimal conditions

It has been reported that not all disposables on the market used for IVF fulfil the quality standard needed for safe procedures. Approximately 25% of all contact materials failed pre-screening with an accurate and sensitive Mouse Embryo Assay (MEA) and were considered sub-optimal for IVF 4 . Vitrolife has developed the most sensitive MEA protocols. These assays are capable of detecting toxic and sub-optimal raw materials, media, and contact materials. The MEA from Vitrolife is sensitive enough to identify subtle problems that will also lead to impaired human embryo development.

how to monitor liquid nitrogen storage tanks in ivf

Cryostorage of eggs, sperm or embryos, is an essential process of an IVF service. However, it also requires careful risk management due to the high risks associated with the quantity of gametes and embryos typically stored and their significance for the individual patient. In addition, there are risks to operators arising from liquid nitrogen (can result in burns) and its vapour (can result in asphyxiation).

Dr Göran Westlander is the Medical Director at Fertilitetscentrum in Sweden. In this blog post he suggests three ways to optimise the oocyte retrieval procedure.

Proven performance Sense

A prospective, randomised study by Wikland et al. found that oocyte retrieval performed with the Sense needle resulted in a greater number of patients with less than expected vaginal bleeding compared to a conventional 17 G needle. Further findings were that the use of Sense also resulted in a significantly reduced overall pain experience – 19% lower compared to a conventional needle. Regardless of needle size, there were no statistical differences in aspiration time, oocyte recovery and fertilisation rate.

Why you should only use IVF certified plastics

The success of an IVF treatment depends on numerous factors. The patients and the causes of their infertility, the hormone stimulation regimen, culture media, quality and maintenance of equipment and skills of staff are all factors that will influence the outcome. One important factor that can have a detrimental impact on the IVF treatment outcome, but is sometimes overlooked, is the quality of the plastic equipment. Learn more in this blog post written by Dr. Ann-Helene Jakobsson.

Quality and workflow efficiency - two sides of the same coin

Looking at available data on results in IVF, outcome differs widely between clinics and countries. In this blog post Dr. Markus Montag speculates if this could be related to quality and workflow in the constantly developing field of IVF. He also provides valuable tips on how to create a more efficient workflow in your lab and thus gain higher quality.

The use of plastic equipment in IVF

There are at least 30 plastic items involved in every IVF procedure. If each of the 30 items used during an IVF-treatment reduces the embryos viability by 2%, the final viability at re-implantation is reduced by 44%.

Embryo culture in G-Series results in significantly higher cell numbers and implantation rates compared to culture in HTF

A study by Kleijkers show that besides cell numbers and implantation rates, gene expression and certain pathways in preimplantation embryos are also affected by culture medium.

The benefits of using a peroxide-free oil

Japanese researcher Otsuki and colleagues experienced reduction in fertilisation rate and impaired embryo development when they began to use a new bottle of oil at their IVF clinic. They decided to make an investigation of the root cause and found it to be high peroxide levels in the oil. Download a summary of their findings to learn more about why high peroxide levels in oil can harm the culture system and the results from peroxide values in oil from different manufacturers.

Do you know the characteristics of the perfect oil for IVF?

Perfect oil for IVF should do nothing but protect the culture. It should not have any negative influence on the gametes, embryos or media by adding unwanted or removing necessary components. However not all oils are or act the same. In this blog you will learn about different types of oil and things to consider when choosing oil for your IVF culture.

How to create optimal culture conditions by paying attention to quality control

The human embryo is extremely sensitive to stress and surrounding factors. In fact, the embryonic stage is the most sensitive stage of the whole life cycle. This is why it is particularly important to use safe and non-toxic products during gamete handling and embryo culture.

Ways to minimise stress to facilitate viable embryo development

In this lecture from ESHRE 2014, Prof David Gardner discusses different types of stresses to the human developing embryo and presents ways create environments and media that restrict the impact of such in vitro-induced stresses.

Minimal environmental and climate footprint

Vitrolife works systematically to reduce the environmental footprint of all its business. In line with this, the head office, including the production facility in Gothenburg, is certified in accordance with the environmental management system standard ISO14001. By mapping sources of emissions in accordance with the GHG protocol, Vitrolife can also work strategically on direct measures to shed light on and reduce a negative impact on the climate and restrict business travel. Examples of activities are more effective coordination of the transportation of goods, limiting business travel and carrying out life-cycle analysis of products. A life cycle analysis of one of Vitrolife’s most important products, EmbryoScope+, was carried out in 2020. Greenhouse gas emissions linked to the manufacture, installation, maintenance, use and recycling of the product were calculated. The total GHG footprint is calculated to amount to 21.3 tonnes of CO 2 . Maintenance-related emissions related to service technicians’ travel and energy consumption when the product is in use are the most significant. Work is ongoing to better plan and digitalize maintenance and service, thus responsibly reducing the product’s total climate footprint. During Covid-19 the business has adapted greatly by replacing travel with digital conferences, meetings and training sessions regarding both internal and external contacts. The aim is to run the Group’s business with as low an environmental and climate footprint as possible without sacrificing Vitrolife’s competitiveness. Scope 1 covers direct emissions from the company’s production facilities and Scope 2 covers electricity consumption by these facilities. Scope 3 covers emissions except purchased energy which occur outside the confines of the business. Vitrolife measures the efficiency of all scopes as emissions of CO 2 in tonnes in relation to the Group’s sales in SEK millions, also called the environmental index . Vitrolife’s facility in Aarhus has gone over to a more renewable energy mix. In addition to these direct changes, Covid-19 has also impacted the Group’s emissions and makes comparisons over time more difficult.

We help you maximise IVF clinic success

Working together with Vitrolife means having a partner that understands the overall challenges involved in running an IVF clinic. Learn more below or request a meeting.

Let's get in contact

We would very much like to meet with you and discuss how we can help you maximise your IVF clinic success. Fill out the form to request a meeting and let's discuss further.

Start your IVF treatment with you in focus

IVF is used to treat a range of fertility problems. An IVF cycle involves several different steps that. will help you increase the chances of becoming pregnant. One of the first steps is collecting the eggs in order to begin the treatment. A successful egg collection needs to be fast, precise and retrieve the maximal amount of undamaged eggs without complications. Our retrieval needle, called Sense, gives you just that. In this video Prof. William Ledger shares his knowledge and know-how for improved patient comfort during egg-collection. Disclaimer: Not intended for audiences in US.

Embryo development with direct cleavage

This is an example of an embryo with an abnormal cleavage pattern. The embryo cleaves directly from 1 to 3 cells.

Embryo development to blastocyst

This is an example of a good quality embryo developing to the blastocyst stage.

EmbryoScope explained

Watch this video to learn more about how EmbryoScope  monitors embryo development while minimising disturbances.

It was very special to see Maxim as a future baby developing as an embryo in a little time-lapse clip. [...] Now he is 6 months old, it’s just a miracle.

Improve your chances with EmbryoScope

Ask your clinician to find out more about EmbryoScope and how it can help improve your chances for a successful IVF treatment.

Helping your embryos to implant with EmbryoGlue

One of the most important steps in IVF is embryo transfer. Give your embryos a helping hand with EmbryoGlue. Watch this movie for a short explanation of how EmbryoGlue works and may benefit your IVF treatment.

We maximised our chances by using EmbryoGlue and we named our son Maxim. We are now a complete and happy family and we are not sure we would have been as successful if we hadn’t used EmbryoGlue.

Improve your chances with EmbryoGlue

Ask your clinician to find out more about EmbryoGlue and how it can help improve your chances for a successful IVF treatment.

What is IVF?

About one in six couples have difficulty conceiving naturally. 1-2 But there’s always hope. In vitro fertilisation, or just ‘IVF’, may be right for you. Watch the video to learn more about the different steps in the IVF journey.

Collecting the eggs easily and successfully with Sense

A retrieval needle, called Sense, gives you a fast and precise egg collection that retrieves the maximal amount of undamaged eggs without complications.

Growing and selecting the best embryo with EmbryoScope

EmbryoScope is an incubator with a built in camera and microscope that takes an image of your embryos every 10 minutes while they stay undisturbed in their stable and warm environment for the entire culture duration.  As a result, time-lapse videos of individual embryos are generated over the 2 to 5 days they remain safely in the EmbryoScope incubator. Your embryologist uses advanced software to look at the time-lapse movies of your embryos to select the best ones for transfer and freezing.

Genetic testing

During an IVF treatment, sometimes genetic testing is performed to make sure the embryo does not contain genetic abnormalities before finally transferring it into the womb.

Helping your embryos to implant with EmbryoGlue

After transfer, the embryo has to rely on its own ability to implant. Using a medium specifically designed for embryo transfer can support implantation even more. EmbryoGlue is a medium that closely resembles the environment in the womb at the time of implantation.

We share your dream

Vitrolife was established in Sweden in 1994 when the field of assisted reproduction was still young. The possibility to help people become parents through assisted reproduction became a reality in the 1960s, following the development of IVF. The birth of Louise Brown in 1978 – the first baby born as a result of IVF – gave new hope to men and women suffering from infertility. As IVF techniques developed the importance of individual components on IVF success began to be understood. Since then Vitrolife has manufactured and supplied these components to IVF clinics all over the world. Vitrolife’s vision is to fulfil the dream of having a baby. Our commitment to increase pregnancy rates has never been more dedicated. Together with equally devoted clinics, we are improving IVF success and fulfilling more couples’ greatest dream. We are very proud to be a part of making this happen.

Working together all the way for improved results

The public IVF clinic Fertilitetsklinikken in Skive has among the best results in Denmark, but was looking for ways to improve even more: - Even though we have good results we are always looking for things to improve , says Laboratory Director Betina Boel Povlsen. One of our support embryologists analysed the clinic's embryo culture procedures in collaboration with the clinic, which led to a few minor changes that resulted in a high increase in the fertilisation rates.

Since we implemented the full culture system from Vitrolife our fertilisation rates, blastocyst development and pregnancy rates have increased across the board.

- Alicia Broussard, biologist, Center for Reproductive Biology of Indiana

‘We see a good blastocyst development since we moved to use G-TL’

- Romualdo Sciorio, Senior Clinical Scientist and Embryologist, Edinburgh Fertility Reproductive Center

‘I’m very happy about using EmbryoGlue. We have good results with it.’

- Dr. Renu Makker, gynecologist, India

We take pride in catching up with long-term and highly valued customers at conferences worldwide. Here’s embryologists Terry Schlenker and Robin Smith from Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine at ASRM 2017.

I really enjoy working with the staff at Vitrolife and the support that they provide for my clinic

- Jim Kontio, Laboratory Supervisor and Senior Embryologist, SIU Fertility and IVF Center, Springfield, IL, USA. Jim has been a Vitrolife customer since 2001.

Quality control - from raw material to delivered product

All Vitrolife products are subjected to a comprehensive quality control program designed for human embryos. Our customers must know that they can rely on our products and this is guaranteed through extensive testing and high lot-to-lot consistency.

Highly controlled  manufacturing

Our manufacturing environment and processes meet the highest standards to ensure consistently high quality of the final product. Our quality system is regularly audited by external authorities from all over the world and we are ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 13485:2016 certified. Quality is truly a cornerstone in our work and we are pleased welcome you on tour inside our manufacturing:

Industry leading 1-cell MEA

We utilise the MEA to screen all materials used in the manufacturing process as well as for testing finished products. The release criteria for the MEA exceed the standards provided by regulatory agencies and meet the standards expected by our customers. Our MEA is designed as a diagnostic tool and not simply a regulatory requirement for release.

Our mouse embryo assay secures embryo viability

The mouse embryo assay (MEA) is the most valuable tool Vitrolife has to ensure safe and consistent products. This makes it possible for our customers to create an optimal environment for embryo development and ultimately helping patients becoming parents.

In close relationship with our customers

We always listen to our customers, whatever their needs – large or small. All customer cases are handled by a group of experts who determine how specific needs can be met and how the input can be used to further improve our products. We never rest our case and always strive to deliver beyond expectations.

The company

Vitrolife is committed to supporting successful treatment outcomes, through a focus on IVF and the needs of clinics and testing labs. We’ve been dedicated to IVF since 1994, when the field was still young. Today, we support customers worldwide - always with sustainability in mind. Vitrolife Group has approximately 1200 employees and the headquarter is located in Sweden with additional locations and production facilities in more than 20 countries world-wide. In 2021, Vitrolife acquired Igenomix which is a leader in reproductive genetic testing services for IVF clinics, founded in 2011. Quality control

To us, quality is being passionate about all the details leading up to the most supportive products in the most protective environment for the most viable embryo. High pregnancy rates depend on numerous factors, some of which are beyond human control. That is why we are devoted to control everything that can be controlled in order to achieve high pregnancy rates. Consequently our QC tests span from each single LOT of raw material to microscopic inspection of every single micropipette.

Regulatory compliance

The CE mark on our products means that they comply with the demands for safety that the European Union’s Medical Device Directive has on this type of products. We have worked for and will continue to insist on the question of the importance of CE marked products becoming a requirement in fertility treatment. Most of our products have CE mark, FDA-clearance, TGA-approval as well as approval from SFDA and Canada Health. Learn more  in this blogpost:
